Strong and cold winds can be one of those really tricky and difficult aspects of camping, especially when trying to protect lots of camping equipment or items outside of a tent or caravan.

The wind can often be changeable and unpredictable in its speed and direction often causing a very unpleasant experience to even the most robust of campers.

I once heard an interesting story of some campers that decided to pitch up one evening at a site with lots of other campers close by. As the evening approached the wind conditions began to grow so bad that they took the decision to tie the side of their tent to the tow bar of their nearby vehicle. They sat it out throughout the night, and on waking up the following morning they stepped out of their tent only to discover that most of the other tents had actually more or less blown away and theirs was one of only a handful left standing. So again to reiterate the point wind can sometimes be a really unwanted guest when camping that sometimes just won’t go away.

Using windbreakers for camping with can be a great idea. There fairly cheap, light weight and can be folded up and kept in most handy locations ready to pulled out if needed.  You can take them with you on days out if you are leaving your camping pitch, and they can usually be hammered into most types ground conditions with some kind of mallet (or a big stone if practicle). That being said some lose soils or sands can often be a little to loose to hold the windbreaker tight into the ground. This can especially be the case when on the beach or sand dunes where the foundations are very loose. It’s always worth checking the ground conditions before settling down to cook your meals or stop for a break.

If a windbreaker is set up correctly then they can be very effective, they often take the force out of most strong winds and can really make a difference to temperature conditions. They can save endless games of chasing after paper plates and trying to stop tins of beans falling from tables.

Also if the windbreakers are positioned correctly around the tent or awning they can potentially offer for a warmer night’s sleep in most cases. When using windbreakers for camping it is a good idea that the windbreaker is set up at a 45o angle to the wind direction. This will then ensure that the pressure against the windbreaker is minimised so as to not cause damage or bending of any aluminium poles. If you have two windbreakers for camping with you could always form a V shape in order to direct the wind on either side of the protected object.

When did the Concept of using Windbreakers For Camping start ?

The concept of using windbreakers for camping have been around for a number of years now and in the past self made windbreakers otherwise known as hurdles were placed around the hedgerows and edges of fields within the English countryside. These hurdles also reinforced by hedge rows would provide adequate protection for crops against the strong English winds. These wooden hurdles can be made by hand, and also may be very handy in a potential survival situation. Or they could just offer the kids a bit of fun to try and make with some nearby pieces of wood. They are made by attaching long poles vertically into either another piece of wood or directly into the ground. The vertical poles maintain a gap distance of about 40 inches from one another and the poles running in a straight line also. Then take thinner branches and begin to weave these in and out of the vertical poles. Once reaching the ends hammer the thinner branches down into position and repeat the process from the other end coming backwards. Occasionally when reaching the ends you can twist the thinner branches and cause them to fold back to repeat the process thus locking the vertical branches into position. This will create a natural windbreak for the campsite and also give a bit of fun for all involved. For some of the top deals on windbreakers for camping.
